Washington is located in north central Kansas and is home to around 1,100 people. It was established in 1860 and later became the county seat of Washington County. Both the county and the city were named after President George Washington.

While no widely known figures are listed from Washington, the area has a notable place in early travel history. The Pony Express, the Oregon-California Trail, and the Overland Stage Line all passed through Washington County.

Speaking of the Pony Express, the station in Hanover, Kansas is the only one still standing in its original location.
