The statue sits on the northeast corner of the downtown city square.
The city was settled in 1875 when Latter Day Saint’s leader William Bickerton founded a religious colony named Zion Valley. Bickerton is said to have asked God not to allow a cyclone to devastate the area. To date, no tornado has touched the area or the town of St. John.

Residents renamed Zion Valley to St. John in 1879. The town chose the name in order to win the Stafford county seat chosen by Governor John P. St. John.
Also in Stafford County, The Jones Store Company was founded in 1887.
