The cemetery was originally known as the Garrett Cemetery. Named after some of the earliest settlers in the town of El Paso, later renamed Derby. They constructed their house just southeast of El Paso cemetery.
Margaret Garrett died in 1917 and Alexander died three years later in 1920. Both are buried at El Paso cemetery.
Interesting Side Note: The Cemetery’s records were kept in the Rose Hill Bank. But after a bank holdup in the 1920’s, the records disappeared and have never been found.
There were a great number of plots without headstones. The headstones that were still standing were pretty beat up and falling apart.
The oldest death date is that of James Hatfield born in July 1873 and died a little over a year later on October 24, 1874. He does not have a headstone.
