Saint John’s Cemetery – Viola

This is another country-side cemetery.  Quiet and lonely, when the wind blows, you can hear the rustling in the trees.

There are roughly 275 people interred here, and like most small cemeteries there are no famous people resting here.

According to findagrave.com, Elizabeth Dugan was born on April 1, 1879 and died on February 7, 1881. Elizabeth’s parents were from Ireland and are buried nearby.

Elizabeth’s dad, Michael was born in 1831.  Her mom, Johanna was born in Clonmell, Ireland in 1842.  Johanna moved to America at age 5.  Her brother, Ed Wall, was a pioneer and founded the city of Clonmell.  Michael and Johanna were married in 1864.  They had 10 children.  Michael passed away from heart failure on July 11, 1902, as reported in the Wichita Star.  Johanna died 20 years later on November 12, 1922.  She died from apoplexy at the age of 79.  The Wichita Eagle’s obituary for Mrs. Dugan said she had 32 grandchildren at the time.

I also noticed this family plot. Mom and Dad looking over two children lost in infancy.

Make sure you check out the other Sedgwick County Cemeteries we have visited so far.
