About 3,500 people are interred at Clearwater Cemetery. John Craig sold a portion of his land for the cemetery in the late 1880’s. The Clearwater Cemetery District was created in June 1943.
It turns out the oldest grave is an empty one. The body of William Hobson was lost in the Civil War. Hobson was born in 1820 in Marathon, Ohio and died September 22, 1863 in Georgia. He was a sergeant of Company 1, 38th Regiment Indiana Infantry
The tombstone’s inscription reads, “ Wounded at the battle of Chickamauga and died 9 days thereafter and with the many heroes who gave their lives to save the Union. His Grave is Unknown.”
There are no famous graves listed for the Clearwater Cemetery. In a previous post about Buffington Cemetery we researched the lone person interred there. Oscar Buffington. His parents were Cynthia and John Buffington. Oscar’s parents and three siblings are all buried here.
Make sure you check out the other Sedgwick County Cemeteries we have visited so far.
